Automotive Preventive Maintenance
These preventive maintenance checks should be performed at the
suggested time intervals to help ensure safe and dependable vehicle
operation:
When refueling
- Check the engine oil.
- Look for low or underinflated tires.
- Check the windshield washer fluid level.
At least once a mouth
- Check the operation of all exterior light, including the
brake lights, turn signals, and hazard warning flashers.
- Check the tire pressure (check tires when cold, not after a long
drive).
- Check the coolant in the coolant recovery reservoir.
At least twice a year
- Check windshield washer spray and wiper
operation.
- Check and replace worn wiper blades
- Check pressure in spare time.
- Check pressure in spare tire.
- Check muffler, exhaust pipes, and clamps.
- Check radiator, heater, and air-conditioning hoses for leaks or
damage.
- Chick the brake fluid level.
- Inspect the lap/shoulder belts for wear.
At least once a year
- Lubricate all hinges and all outside key locks.
- Lubricate the rubber weatherstrips for the
doors.
- Check the connections at the battery.
- Check the power-steering fluid level.
- Clean the body’s water drain holes.
While operating the vehicle
- Pay attention to and note ay changes in the sound of the exhaust or any
smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.
- Notice if the vehicle constantly turns slightly or pulls to one side of
the road.
- Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased
steering effort of looseness in the steering wheel.
- Check for fluid leaks under the vehicle. (Water dripping form the
air-conditioning after use is normal.)
- Check the parking brake.
